Political Parties

The following parties will contest in Lok Sabha elections.

Indian National Congress

The Indian National Congress leads the UPA coalition which is the incumbent government. It suffers from 10 years on incumbency.

After Manmohan Singh has led the UPA coalition to two successive terms, the party has not endorsed a prime ministerial candidate, though AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi is likely to become the Prime Minister if UPA comes to power.

Bharatiya Janata Party

After two terms of not leading the government, the Bharatiya Janata Party will fight hard to return to power. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has been declared as the Prime Ministerial candidate by the BJP for the 2014 General Election. The success of the party in the Legislative Assembly elections in November 2013 has raised the hopes of the BJP party.

Narendra Modi

Narendra Modi is the Chief Minister of Gujarat and has led the BJP party to power several times in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly elections.

In November 2012, he is endorsed by BJP senior leader and leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj saying that he is fit to be BJP's prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 elections. "There are no two views on Modi being a competent candidate for PM's post. Modi has done great work in Gujarat," said Sushma Swaraj for the first time.

Important Notes

  • For the first time in the history of Lok Sabha elections in India, voters will be able to exercise "None of the Above" (NOTA) option.
  • The entire election will be held using electronic voting machines (EVM)
  • The 2014 Lok Sabha elections will involve 814 million voters, an increase of 100 million from the 2009 elections
  • 28,314 transgenders enrolled in "others" category
  • 9.3 polling stations will be used for 2014 elections, an increase of 12 percent from 2009
  • 17.2 lakh control units and 18.78 lakh ballot units
  • Model code of conduct to be in force for 69 days
