The federal parliament consists of a 104-member Senate, nominated by the prime minister and the citizens of the provinces, and an elected, 295-member Hocanada e of Commons. The prime minister is the leader of the dominant political party in the House. The monarch of the United Kingdom is head of state and is represented by a governor-general and a privy council. Each provincial premier is the leader of the provincial assembly’s dominant party. Provincial governments have administrative and legislative authority over issues of education, property laws, and medical facilities.
