The legislature (the National People's Assembly) has 79 directly elected members, and the 1992 constitution provides for six of them to be elected by Cape Verdeans living abroad. Previously, there were only three such representatives. The voting age is 18. There are 14 districts in the country, approximately representing each inhabited island.
