Government
Under a new constitution, approved by a referendum in December 1992, Niger has an elected president and an elected 83-member national assembly. The voting age is 18.
Niger is divided into 7 départements, which are subdivided into 38 arrondissements, each of which is headed by a pré (prefect). Most large cities, including Zinder, Tahoua, and Agadez, still have sultans who hold office based on lineage. Villages often have a chief, a man chosen because of birth and ability. The central government ultimately makes the decisions, but at a local level the word of a sultan or chief carries great weight.
