Government

Togo was governed as a single-party republic—under General Gnassingbe Eyadéma's military regime—from 1969 until 1991. In 1992, following a national referendum, a new constitution re-established the country as a multi-party democracy. The new constitution vests executive power in a president who is popularly elected to a five-year term. Legislative power is exercised by a national assembly. Its 81 members also serve five-year terms. The president appoints the prime minister from among the majority in the legislature.

The highest court of Togo is the Supreme Court, at Lomé. Criminal justice is administered by two appeals courts and several special tribunals. A tribunal of state security was established in 1970.
